Race Recap

Well, my prerace prediction didn’t come through, but wow, what a race! Tomas Scheckter beat Sam Hornish, Jr. by less than a car length for yet another super-close TMS IRL race finish.

I took a ton of photos, many by pointing my Canon A95 through my dad’s binoculars. I was surprised how well it worked. (Focusing was really tedious, though.) I’ve broken the pictures up into three sets — one for each race. Click on any of the links below for the pics from that event. Enjoy!

Now, here it is, your moment of Zen:

My pre-race prediction

Helio Castroneves. And yes, that name took me 5 minutes to key into the phone. (Took this picture by pointing the phone through a pair of binoculars.)

It’s a great day to go racing in Texas

Boogity, boogity, boogity boys! 90 degrees with a good breeze. And our seats are in the shade.

So I’ve been on a power trip lately

Hey, can I get a rimshot? Thanks folks, I’ll be here all week. Be sure to tip your waitress.

Great Moments in Standards and Practices

While catching up on past episodes of The Daily Show I’d backlogged on TiVo, I ran across this classic moment:

Pixelate this!

I can imagine two different scenarios for how this happened:

  1. The American Idol hippie dude’s move was more subtle, and Comedy Central’s blur-meister missed it
  2. Comedy Central’s censors have some magic formula or rule that says, “it’s okay for someone to give someone else the finger, but if they break the fourth wall with the third metacarpal, that’s bad.”

In either case, I just have to laugh.

It’s alive!

How evil can one little Volkswagen look? Glowing orange headlights certainly help…

Under the Bridge Downtown

This bridge carries the Nolan Ryan Expressway over the lake just north of The Ballpark in Arlington. I really like how clearly the field behind the bridge came out. Perhaps later I’ll post another version of this shot with a lighter foreground. You definitely need to click on this one to see the larger version. The devil’s in the details on this one. (Seriously, you can see him hiding behind a tree, if you look closely.)
